Many people remember picking rosehips in the 50's and 60's and being paid 3d (old pennies) per lb. Rosehips are rich in vitamin C and vitamins A, D and E. The hips also contain a substance called Litozin which is believed to be useful in the relief of arthritis. A study in Denmark using powdered seeds and capsules gave significant reductions of pain scores in patients with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee after just 3 weeks of treatment. The study came about after a Danish farmer in the 1980's realised that he had managed to improve the arthritis in his shoulder by eating Rose hip jam, a local folk medicine. On grinding up the hips and creating a concentrated powder, which he took for a month, he found his pain disappeared. He told his Doctor who contacted the Copenhagen University and they conducted the research.
